Idomeneus was the king of Crete and one of the most respected Greek commanders at Troy. A grandson of Minos, he led eighty ships to the war and fought with distinction. In the Iliad, Homer portrays him as an older but ferocious warrior, particularly effective in the brutal fighting around the Greek ships. After Troy fell, Idomeneus’s journey home was cursed, and he was eventually exiled from Crete.
