Cerberus is the infamous multi-headed hound of Hades in Greek mythology, best known for guarding the gates of the Underworld to prevent the dead from leaving. A terrifying creature with three heads (sometimes more in earlier sources), a serpent’s tail, and snakes protruding from various parts of his body, he serves as a symbol of death’s finality and the power of the chthonic gods.
Origin and Myth
Cerberus is one of the monstrous offspring of Typhon and Echidna, making him the sibling of the Hydra, Chimera, and Orthrus. His primary role is to stand at the gates of the Underworld, loyal to Hades, and ensure that no soul escapes once it enters.
Cerberus is most famously associated with Heracles’s Twelfth Labor, in which the hero must capture the beast and bring it to the surface without using weapons. Heracles wrestles him into submission and drags him into the land of the living, fulfilling his final task.
Other myths feature Orpheus charming Cerberus with his lyre and music to enter the Underworld, and Aeneas passing by the beast with the help of a drugged honey-cake.

- Unrelenting Loyalty: Devoted guardian of the Underworld.
- Venomous Bite: Poison drips from his jaws.

Symbolism
Cerberus symbolizes the boundary between life and death—unchangeable, terrifying, and eternal. His three heads represent past, present, and future, or birth, life, and death.
